Jon is a native of Panama City, FL and has been involved with baseball his entire life. He played two years at Gulf Coast Community College followed by two years at Auburn University. on graduation he moved on to Florida State University as a Graduate Assistant and served as Infielders Coach. He spent two years as the Pitching Coach at Columbus State in Columbus, GA. He spent ten years as Quality Control Director for Doyle Baseball School before starting Simply the Best. Jon has been working with Madison Baseball for the past two years and will return again this year to conduct the Pitchers/Catchers Clinic (March 4), the Players School (March 20-24), and all Coaches Certification Clinics. He has done an outstanding job in the past and we our proud to have him as part of the supporting cast of Madison Baseball. Below you will find excerpts from the Simply the Best Coaches Manual, with slight modifications to tailor it to MBA. We feel that parents, and not just coaches, can benefit from knowing this information. Please use it to help determine if your coach is doing an adequate job with your child and his/her team. The following information provides a system of learning for each age group. This is vital information because it outlines what to teach the players based on age and comprehension. It will help ensure the youngster's success throughout his/her career because it shows what to teach and skills to master as they progress through the league play. Each topic should be taught and reinforced at practice. It's important not to try to progress too soon. Use the information to build upon. No matter your teams age, you must begin with the information listed for the 5-6 year olds first, and try to progress quickly. 5-6 Year Olds or T-Ball Hitting - Finish Position & Contact Point (it's important to master these even before teaching stance) Fielding - Proper Fielding Position Throwing - Proper Throwing Stance Sliding - Correct Position and possible Pop Up Base Running - Home to First Defense - Pop-ups using a tennis ball thrown up from a short distance 7-8 Year Olds or Machine/Coach Pitch Hitting - Trigger Tap (proper combination of balance & movement prior to the swing) Fielding - Cover Cradle (proper use of the throwing hand) Throwing - Release Point & Shuffle Sliding - Make sure they pop up slide Base Running - Taking signs, rounding first, and tag ups Defense - Basic cut-offs to 2nd & 3rd 9-10 Year Olds or Player Pitch Hitting - Hip Explosion & Sacrifice Bunting Fielding - Last Two Steps, Infield Depths, Outfield Depths, and Drop Steps Throwing - All Previous Information Sliding - All Previous Information Base Running - Stealing and all coaches signs Defense - Basic cut-offs and relays to 2nd, 3rd, & Home, teach bunt defense Pitching - Fundamentals and throwing strikes Quick Hands - Begin to teach how to remove the ball quickly from the glove on ground balls and in throwing 11-12 Year Olds Hitting - All hitting including hand action and preventing a long swing Fielding - All information and make sure they move through the ball. Back hand ground balls, double play pivots and slow rollers. Throwing - Reinforce all information and emphasize foot action and shuffle. Also keep the throwing hand elbow up through the throwing motion. Sliding - Pop up slides, no head first slides Base Running - Proper lead-off techniques Defense - Defending the double steal, advanced cut-offs and relays for the double Pitching - Begin teaching the curveball and changeup. Also covering first and pitching from the stretch 13-14 Year Olds Hitting - Opposite field hitting and hitting behind the runner Fielding - All Previous Information Throwing - All Previous Information Sliding - All Previous Information Base Running - Secondary leads, delayed steal Defense - All bunt defenses Pitching - Pitching Philosophy & pickoffs Conditioning P.O.
